Spring Break, or, Why I Worked All Break

Tonight is the last night of my spring break, and the last day I will have off (besides weekends, which barely count ;)) until June 28.  There is much to be said. First off, the short answer to the question “Srta. D, why did you work over your spring break?” is because I needed some…

What Has Been Happening?

Well, I am still teaching Spanish For America.  I am now considered a fully certified K-12 Spanish teacher.  And, in line with my 2-year commitment, I am still teaching at the same school.  Year 2 is much better, overall, and I’ll explain some reasons why. When I walked into my school at the beginning of last…

La Srta.: Also a recess coach

So I came here to vent my frustrations and when I went to look at the list of draft posts I haven’t yet posted, I found one with the above title.  I thought that was pretty funny, considering it’s also the reason I am currently frustrated. To make a long story short, sorry I haven’t…

My kids: infuriatingly awesome

Weekly update here.  You know, I think three weeks after the last one.  I’m bad at this game.  I’ll start with some stories that I never, ever want to lose and so I hope I read this site when I’m a million and one. First off, a kid that I have a lot of trouble…

An interesting week! Reflect.

So it was an interesting week in my school, as my previous two posts may have indicated.  I’ve hit some lows this week — in motivation especially.  Since starting this job I have been tired, and frustrated with my kids and myself and my life and my abilities.  I’ve been frustrated with my school.  This…

Just a quick thought as I paperclip 120 baggies to 120 8-page flashcard pages to send home to 120 families. My “office” lives behind a temporary wall in the resource room, so I spend an unusual amount of time around my resource room kids.  God, do I love them. They are in the room for…

It’s beeeeen One Week!

So I’ve decided to try and commit to a weekly reflection, posted here, about the week/my job in general/education in general/TFA haps in my region.  The wandering of a slightly crazed elementary school Spanish teacher This week was our first week back at the job (we had two weeks off instead of the usual one).…

Teaching in 2012: Lots of thoughts

I think my resolution this year is to live intentionally. I want to erase those moments of cool irony from my life–I think it takes a lot of courage to announce your passion for the world, to embrace it and its wonder. It is easier and safer to be cynical and jaded. But if more…

Oh, hey, Teach For Us…

How’s it going?  Long time no talk.  Saying I have been busy is an understatement, but you know that’s the case for all the teachers on here and so I must admit that I don’t have any legitimate excuse. In the weeks since I have posted, I have gone through professional development and been at…

After Institute

I’m sitting in Newark once again, an hour early for a brunch at what is touted to be an excellent Halal Soul Food place?  Looking forward to some real food.  I had a crazy and bizarre afternoon/night that (temporarily) wiped the memory of Institute from the surface of my brain, but it’s back.  I thought…

Oh hey, Friday of Institute Week 3

Oh hey, Teach For Us… Long time no see.  I’m not going to write about weeks 2, 3, and 4.  First thing I’m going to do is post a reflection I found on the computer from the first week of Institute.  This is dated as July 1, 2011: I am currently sitting in a session…

Well, it’s 6:30 on a Friday, and what else would I be doing but sitting in a Barnes and Noble and thinking about Teach For America? It has most assuredly been what I can only describe as a bizarre week.  While (after reading other blogs) I can say it was not the most negative 2011…

The first 2 days of Induction

Welcome back to my wonderful world of procrastination!  I’ll be your host this evening. Actually, while I am procrastinating, I really also want to legitimately write down some of what I’m feeling so that I remember in the months and the years to come.  Which is not to say that you should get your hopes…

Placement, Induction … Life

So, all y’all have really clever post titles, blog titles, blurbs, basically (it seems) lives in general and I’m feeling a little less than capable compared to all of the brilliant folks here.  So thanks for making me feel inadequate, beautiful TFU bloggers I figured I would update TFA hopefuls out there (and my family–…

Pre-Interview Fair Jitters

Step One of coping: procrastination.  Enter Teach For Us. Well, I figured that I haven’t been exactly flooding the interwebs with my talking and information-sharing, so it was only fair that I updated y’all on the situation. (Not The Situation–I’m in Jersey but I’m not that Jersey). Starting backward, tomorrow is the first big interview…

Voluntary Segregation?

I don’t know if you have heard about this, but I was wondering what you all thought about it.  To summarize, there’s a school in Pennsylvania that for a short period of time each day, offers what it calls “mentoring” that is separated by race, gender, and language.  It’s being termed by some “voluntary segregation.”…

I decided to force myself to post here as a break from my thesis.  Right now, I have just woken up from a three hour nap that was the first time I slept in two days.  I have been horrifically sick, and so to take advantage of that I have only been eating these granola…

Why don’t people write &c. instead of etc. anymore?  People should write &c. instead of etc.  I’ll be on the vanguard of that trend for sure. Anyway, HI EVERYBODY! I’ve been itching to post about a few things but the perennial worry of posting too much, especially on a site people go to to check…

The big post-Praxis update

First I wanted to take a quick serious second to register my sadness at the tragedy that’s befallen Japan and the ongoing crisis.  I encourage everyone to donate to a group like the Red Cross and help show international support for a human cause. That said. I have SO much to cover!  In the interest…

Praxis II Spanish: World Language

Welp, this is a bit late to help much of anyone this time around, but I figure that a) since it’s a new test, and b) since it’s a requirement for at least the future NJ Spanish teachers/TFA CMs teaching Spanish in lots of places out there, I would give my impressions of the test. …

Teach For…Shenanigans?

Before I start, I’d like to note that if I have to change my password every time I try and log in here (because I’m an ijit that doesn’t remember her password, but only for this one site), I’m going to be very grumpy at myself. That being said, it’s time to update the larger…

It hasn’t been all that long since I’ve updated, but I am enthusiastically avoiding reading and organizing my thesis (though I AM excited that it recently was accepted into the Nation Conference of Undergraduate Research!), and I thought it would be nice to update the larger world out there on the post-acceptance process.  There’s SO…
